Kate Washburn didn’t know what to make of the email a friend sent to her office with the abbreviation “NSFW” written at the bottom.

Then she clicked through the attached sideshow, titled “Awkward Family Photos.” It included shots of a family in furry “nude” suits and of another family alongside a male walrus in a revealing pose.

After looking up NSFW on NetLingo.com—a Web site that provides definitions of Internet and texting terms—she discovered what it stood for: “Not safe for work.”

As text-messaging shorthand becomes increasingly widespread in emails, text messages and Tweets, people like Washburn are scrambling to decode it. In many offices, a working knowledge of text-speak is becoming de rigueur.

One reason for the surge in texting abbreviations—more than 2,000 and counting, according to NetLingo—is the boom in social-media sites like Twitter, where messages are limited to 140 characters.

Text messages, too, are limited in length, so users have developed an alphabet soup of shorthand abbreviations to save time, and their thumbs.

Taking time to learn the jargon may seem like a WOMBAT (“Waste of money, brains and time”). But with over one trillion text messages sent and received in the U.S. last year, according to CTIA-The Wireless Association, an industry trade group, you run the risk of feeling out of it if you don’t.

Tonight the fifth season of So You Think You Can Dance came to a conclusion as the two-hour finale aired live from the Kodak theater. After numerous repeat performances and plenty of build up, the four finalists were narrowed down to two before a winner was crowned.

We were treated to a number of the judges' favorite performances while we waited for the results. All of the finalists returned to participate. This included Melissa and Ade performing Tyce Diorio’s “This Woman’s Work” breast-cancer themed dance, which got a standing ovation from breast-cancer survivor Christina Applegate, who was in the audience. We also got a Fame plug, as Kherington Payne (season 4 contestant and one of the stars of Fame) surprised the finalists by letting them in to an early screening of the film.

During the lengthy finale, Cat announced that Kayla was the voters fourth choice. Evan was next to be eliminated. While Kayla's a fantastic dancer, I think she lacked some of the charm that Jeanine had in terms of her responses to the judges criticisms. Kayla always came off as a bit too polite and polished to me, which might have been interpreted as her not having enough personality by the voters. Whether or not that’s the case, I do think that was part of her undoing in the competition because she really is a fantastic dancer. Evan, on the other hand, was all personality and his charm on stage definitely compensated for what he lacked as a dancer.

This is not to say that Evan was by any means, a poor dancer but given that his skills lay predominantly in the Broadway-field, it was more of a challenge for him to measure up to some of the other dancers in the competition.

It came down to Brandon and Jeanine and again, and I have to say that I think personality might have given Jeanine the edge she needed to win. Both she and Brandon are fantastic dancers, however I found myself wanting Jeanine to win out over Brandon because I felt like she put more of herself in front of the camera than we saw from Brandon. I always got the impression that he held back in his interviews and that he downplayed his awareness of his skill, perhaps aiming for modesty. Jeanine always seemed much more candid and expressive in interviews and when responding to the judges praise or criticisms and in competitions like these, that goes a long way.
As the finale wrapped up, Cat announced that Jeanine Mason is this season’s winner of So You Think You Can Dance. While I believe it was much deserved, I doubt anyone will be forgetting Brandon, Kayla or Evan anytime soon.

Big Brother 11 Episode 13: Someone gets the special mystery power

I only watch the shows on CBS.  I don't read the gossip, I don't have live feeds or showtime.  Please do not post spoilers in response to this post since some of us would rather be surprised!  Your cooperation is much appreciated!!***

Last episode, Ronnie and Lydia were left on the block after Michele won the POV.  Tonight, everything could change though, as someone would be given the new special mystery power.  The Coup D'Etat would allow one player to change the nominations either this week or next.  Who received this power?  And will they use it tonight?  Let's find out!

Paranoid Russell: Near the start of tonight's episode, Michele and Jordan were talking about books when Russell came into the backyard.  When Russell came over they just happened to stop talking and when they told him they were just talking about books he didn't believe it.  Paranoid are we?  They were really talking about books.  Russell asked Jordan later what they were talking about and he said they really were talking about books.  Russell thinks everyone is talking about him behind his back.  Michele told them that Chima, Jessie and Natalie had always been out to get him, so he shouldn't be surprised.

Ronnie and Lydia remained on the block in Big Brother 11 Episode 12, so one of them will be going home tonight unless they are saved by the coup d’etat, which I’m assuming is highly unlikely.

According to Julie Chen, it’s a whole new game. Unfortunately, it’s still probably going to be lame.

America has been voting for the week, in record numbers, which probably means that like 12 people have voted a million times each. They’re going to keep the decision a secret for now.

Jordan is convinced (again) that the votes are on her side. Lydia, meanwhile, is not convinced that she is safe, so it’s time to mope. At least she’s not crying for a change.

Michele and Jordan are talking about books. Russell doesn’t believe it. Jordan talking about literature? No, it’s really true. With Russell’s paranoia running, Michele takes the opportunity to tell him that his alliance was going to turn on him anyway. Jessie denies that Chima ever wanted to get rid of him. So Natalie sends Chima upstairs, telling her to play nice. Not content with that, Chima wants to drag Michele into the room. Now. Michele denies that she said anything. She stupidly believed what she was saying to Russell would remain in confidence. Now Russell looks like the liar. This is thoroughly amusing. The fight gets dragged outside where the whole yard can hear. Both Russell and Chima believe they win fights based on volume.

Ronnie’s plan to stay in the game: get a sympathy vote from Jordan. Really? Jeff and Jordan, taking their relationship the slowest in the history of Big Brother, have their first kiss, but their romance is destroyed by Ronnie’s attempt to beg for a sympathy vote. As begging goes, this is the most pitiful ever.

Russell kisses up to Julie, as if she has any power. Butter up a producer if you want assistance. Back to the game, which alliance is he loyal to? Jeff or Jessie? His answer: both.

It obviously was going to be Jeff or Jordan to get the coup d’etat, and it happens to be Jeff. It’s a popularity contest, after all, with no accounting for the fact that both of them suck at this game, although to be fair, it’s not like anybody else in the house knows what they’re doing. Big Brother has a history of making a special effort to keep the more popular players around for as long as possible. I do have a new rule to propose, though: no contestant gets a power they can’t even pronounce. Pointless for him to use it this week because he’d like to see either of the two go, but next week he could easily shake things up. Either that, or he’ll just not use it at all and make it useless like it was the last time.

Ronnie has positive things to say in his farewell speech. Until he gets to Michele, the worst human being he’s ever met. Okay, so you think she’s voting for him?

By a vote of 4-3, Ronnie has been evicted from the house. While he built up some loyal allies, he simply played too hard too obviously. Ronnie continues the pattern of whiners getting evicted. Although he has hugs for everybody else, he can’t get over that Michele refused to side with him. Granted, in her goodbye speech to him, Michele tells him she hates him, too.

Kevin sees a button out of the corner of his eye. So he pushes it. The result: the houseguests get advice from the fans all night long. Hopefully they paid close attention because the HOH competition is based on it. Michele and Lydia are eliminated on the first question. Everybody gets the second question right. Jessie gets the third question wrong. Jordan and Jeff are eliminated on the fourth question, but it really doesn’t matter because Jeff has the power of coup d’etat. Kevin and Natalie are eliminated, and Chima is the new HOH.

Time for the power to swing back that way? No. Not only can Jeff pull one or both nominees off the block, but he can also pick one or both replacements, which pretty much means Jessie or Natalie is going home unless somebody else really pisses off Jeff. Like I said at the start of the post: lame.

After thousands of auditions across the country and the grueling callbacks in Las Vegas, the judges of summer’s No. 1 series, SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE, announced Season Five’s Top 20 finalists tonight. The top girls include Randi Evans, Karla Garcia, Caitlin Kinney, Asuka Kondoh, Janette Manrara, Jeanine Mason, Kayla Radomski, Melissa Sandvig, Paris Torres and Ashley Valerio; and the top guys are Kupono Aweau, Tony Bellissimo, Brandon Bryant, Phillip Chbeeb, Jason Glover, Vitolio Jeune, Max Kapitannikov, Evan Kasprzak, Ade Obayomi and Jonathan Platero. The competition truly begins Wednesday, June 10 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) as the Top 20 finalists dance for the judges’ praise and America’s votes on the season’s first performance show. The Top 20 are paired into 10 couples who will each work with a world-renowned choreographer to compose a dance routine representing their assigned genre. After each Wednesday performance show, the phone lines will open and the fate of these 20 finalists – one of whom will be the named America’s Favorite Dancer – will be left up to the voting fans.

On the live results shows beginning Thursday, June 11 (9:00-10:00 PM ET live PT/tape-delayed), the three couples with the lowest number of votes will be announced. Each week the six contestants comprising the bottom three couples are given a chance to perform solo routines in the hopes of convincing the judges to keep them in the competition. The judges then decide which dancers stay and which two are eliminated. If a couple is split apart, the two individual dancers who remain become a couple the following week.

Xbox Live Down: Status can’t connect

We’re glad to tell you that the Xbox Live service should be back to normal today, after a week of disruptions. Xbox Live had been suffering from problems all week, but the latest news is that everything should be back as it was today.

As stated here over at DeviceMag, the downtime stopped many users from connecting to XboxLive all together, leading to a ‘lot’ of frustrated gamers, as you can imagine.

It wasn’t only XboxLive that has been suffering either, as Facebook and Twitter also experienced similar blackouts for a while. Today though, everything seems to be in place, well according to the XboxLiveStatus on Twitter anyway.

i just tried to connect to xbox live and it said your router or ISP may be blocking access to xbox live and that i have to go on my pc and go to my router config. web page and make sure 3074 is open on my firewall

klick on your Start button and select "Run...". There, type "cmd" into the field and hit ok (without the quotes).
Then type "ipconfig" into the black window that opened and hit enter.
this will give you some infos, one of it beeing your Default Gateway.
Note this address: something like 192.168.0.1 or the likes and enter this exact number into the internet browser on your pc.
You should now connect to the webbrowser of your router.
It might want a username and password and you should have the option to configure the port to open. Unfortunately, the configuration is alwasy different on different router models, so without the exact router model you have we can not tell you how exactly to configure the router to open the port.

Hours before the winner in the fifth season of "So You Think You Can Dance" would be named, judge and producer Nigel Lythgoe didn't think the best dancer would necessarily win. In fact, he told reporters at the TV critics press tour in Pasadena Thursday, "I don't believe ever the best dancer has ever won." "Ever," said judge Adam Shankman. So You Think You Can Dance has crowned its fifth winner!
Jeanine Mason, 18, waltzed away with the $250,000 prize and the title of America's Favorite Dancer on Thursday night. Jeanine's win came at the end of a fabulous finale, which featured encore's of some of the judges' favorite performances from season five -- including the memorable addiction number choreographed by Mia Michaels and the touching breast cancer-themed routine choreographed by Tyce Diorio.
But the hot dance numbers weren't the only exciting part of the show. The eliminations also kept us glued to the screen.
First to go was Kayla Radomski, who said she would miss working with the choreographers the most. Next, it was Evan Kaspraz's turn to get the bad news. "This has been an absolutely amazing journey," he said. "I never thought that when I auditioned in Memphis with my brother that I would be standing here."

Well it has all ended, as last night was the Biggest Loser Finale 2009, and we can now tell you who the winner is. Stop reading now if you have not watched it, the winner was Helen Phillips, and she certainly deserved to win.

Phillips is now half the woman that she used to be, as she has lost a staggering 140 pounds. Being crowned The Biggest Loser: Couples for 2009 has now made her $250,000 richer. Helen Phillips lost 54.47 per cent of her body weight, and that was just enough to beat rival Mike Morelli.

The final minutes of last night's three-hour live finale of NBC's "The Biggest Loser" were a nail-biter for fans and supporters of Bethpage's Tara Costa. The former plus-size model-turned-reality star shed a whopping 155 pounds during the popular weight-loss reality show, but in the end, she was edged out by a Michigan homemaker for the title and $250,000 cash prize.

About 30 or so of Costa's neighbors, friends, a former teacher and classmates at Bethpage High School gathered at a viewing party at B।K. Sweeney's Parkside Tavern in Bethpage, where a dinner special - tossed salad topped with Cajun salmon - was named in her honor and multiple TVs were tuned to NBC.

Kimbell Art art museum acquires the earliest known work of Michelangelo Antonioni The Torment of Saint Anthony.

Michelangelo’s painting of The Torment of Saint Anthony, described by his earliest biographers, has been acquired by the Kimbell Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas. Its purchase was announced Wednesday, May 13, 2009, by the Kimbell’s newly appointed director, Dr. Eric McCauley Lee. Executed in oil and tempera on a wooden panel, The Torment of Saint Anthony is the first painting by Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475–1564) to enter an American collection, and one of only four known easel paintings generally believed to come from his hand. The others are the Doni Tondo in Florence’s Uffizi Gallery and two unfinished paintings in London’s National Gallery, The Manchester Madonna and The Entombment.

Dr. Lee commented, “The acquisition of this rediscovered work from the very beginnings of Michelangelo’s artistic career offers an extraordinary opportunity to advance the understanding of European art.” Kay Fortson, president of the Kimbell Art Foundation’s board of directors, said, “This is an outstanding acquisition for the Kimbell. Michelangelo’s rare painting will be a beacon in the Museum’s already distinguished collection.”

FORT WORTH – In an extraordinary coup, the Kimbell Art Museum has acquired the earliest known painting by Michelangelo, one of only four easel paintings by the Renaissance master in the world.

The Kimbell's purchase, The Torment of Saint Anthony (1487-88), will be the only painting by Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) to enter the permanent collection of a U.S. museum. Two of the other paintings are in London's National Gallery, and a third is in Florence's Uffizi Gallery.

The 18 ½ -by-131/4-inch oil-and-tempera on poplar panel will go on view at the museum this fall.

The opportunity to buy the work, for an undisclosed sum, came just weeks after the arrival of newly appointed Kimbell director Eric McCauley Lee earlier this year. He was having lunch one day with former Kimbell director Edmund "Ted" Pillsbury, who had heard about the painting, which was being studied in the conservation studios at the Metropolitan Museum of New York.

Is this painting of Saint Anthony tormented by demons the earliest extant painting by Michelangelo? Keith Christiansen, a curator of European painting at the Metropolitan Museum in New York is convinced the work is indeed a Michelangelo. The painting in question would have been painted when Michelangelo was a young (12 0r 13 year old) apprentice in the established Florentine painter Ghirlandaio's workshop. Michelangelo's earliest biographers including Giorgio Vasari and his former student Ascanio Condivi describe how a young Michelangelo was inspired by an engraving of Saint Anthony tormented by demons by the 15th century German artist Martin Schongauer. Michelangelo freely created his own version of the composition providing richly invented colors and a Tuscan landscape in which the action takes place. Carol Vogel in the New York times describes how Met curator Christansen's detailed examination of the painting convinced him that the work was Michelangelo's earliest known painting:

2009 American Idol Winner? Simon Cowell Makes Prediction

American Idol judge Simon Cowell has predicted that Adam Lambert is going to win the Fox singing competition this year, according to an Associated Press report. Cowell made his remarks on yesterday’s episode of the Oprah Winfrey show, saying that Lambert is fearless, unique and “he’s got swagger.”

Winfrey also featured Scottish singing sensation Susan Boyle, who is competing on the UK equivalent of American Idol –Britain’s Got Talent. Boyle told Winfrey she’s “loving every second” of her newfound celebrity. The 47-year-old spinster became famous after she shocked judges and the audience with her remarkable rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream” from the musical “Les Miserables.”

American Idol Top 3 - My Predictions For Tonight's Results Show

Last night the remaining Idols - Kris Allen, Danny Gokey and Adam Lambert - sang their little hearts out, with both a personal song choice and a judge's song choice. All three knocked their personal choices out of the park, but were a little iffy on the judges' choices, proving that they know their talents better than the judges.

The judges made a clear and blatant pitch for Adam, Simon going so far as to ask people to vote for Adam.

A few weeks ago I went out on a limb and predicted Kris Allen to win the competition. I thought I'd explain my thoughts a little more and then we'll see tonight if I'm right.

1) I think the judges' blatant bias may work against Adam tonight. Fans have proven again and again that they'll vote for another contestant just to prove the judges wrong.

2) Adam probably isn't winning any new fans. Yes, he's extremely talented, but unless you like his style of rock music, you probably aren't going to pick up the phone and vote.

3) Adam has been in the bottom three; but it's likely he picked up Allison's voters after she was sent home last week.

4) I think Kris has been the underdog in this competition, and I think he's going to make it through tonight. In fact, I think they'll call him first and let the audience sweat out whether Danny or Adam is through while we sit through Katy Perry singing.

5) I think that Kris has a better chance of winning than the other contestants.

What are your American Idol predictions?

Two of the remaining "American Idol" finalists -- Danny Gokey, Adam Lambert, Kris Allen -- will advance to the finals on tonight's results show. It airs 9 p.m. on Fox.

On Tuesday's performance show, when they each sang two songs, Allen put up a good fight against Gokey and Lambert, contestants who have long seemed like a preordained Top 2. Many fans labeled Allen's acoustic take on Kanye West's "Heartless" the best song of the night.

After losing 140 pounds -- more than half of her original body weight -- 48-year-old Helen Phillips won the 'Biggest Loser' season 7 crown and the $250,000 grand prize.

Having begun the season at 257 pounds, Phillips wasn't considered a serious threat to beat out considerably younger finalists Mike Morelli (19) and Tara Costa (24). Costa, a ferociously competitive former model, won a record 12 challenges and didn't once fall below the dreaded yellow line (a 'Biggest Loser' first). And Morelli, a fan favorite, beat out his father Ron with enough call-in votes to win the third spot in the finale.

But it was Phillips who proved that age -- and weight -- ain't nothing but a number. Though she was vilified by some for sending her own daughter, Shanon, home (through a mutual decision), Phillips had the last laugh at the end. Her final weigh-in put her at 117 pounds, pushing her past her competitors for a total weight loss of 54.47%. It also cemented trainer Jillian Michaels' reputation for training 'Loser' winners -- she's trained the victorious contestant in every season on which she's appeared.

Helen Philips won the Biggest Loser Season 7 and went home with the $250,000 prize. But the biggest prize she got is not the money but the new Helen that she got. She lost 54.47% of her initial 257 pounds (117kg) to weigh in at 117 pounds (53kg). Wow! Look at her before and after images, that's a great achievement!

Fernanda is the youngest daughter of the landowner Gonzalo Elizalde, owner of a major dairy company, and Eduardo is the son of Soledad, the housekeeper of the family Elizalde. The two children have grown up together and are united by a love innocent and fair, despite the difference in social class.
